A blaze erupted at a warehouse storing equipment for the popular nightclub Route 66 Bangkok, in Soi Soonvijai–Rama IX, Huai Khwang district, late Monday afternoon.
Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes. However, the burning of soundproofing and other club materials released toxic gases into the area, making the operation difficult.
Suriya Chairawiwan, director of the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department, said that employees first noticed flames inside the storage facility around 5.10pm and attempted to extinguish the fire with portable extinguishers.
However, the fire spread quickly due to the flammable materials stored inside.
“When our firefighters arrived, they faced intense heat and thick, toxic smoke from various materials used in the club’s construction and decoration,” Suriya said.
“It took about 30 minutes to control the fire. Officers will continue spraying water throughout the night to prevent heat buildup and reignition, with thermal cameras monitoring the area.”
Somboon Khruakirittham, director of the Huai Khwang district office, confirmed that the fire occurred only in the warehouse area, not in the main entertainment venue. The nightclub can remain open for business as usual, he said.
The area has been declared a restricted zone for safety reasons. The district’s engineering division will inspect the structure to determine the cause and extent of the damage, a process expected to take one to two weeks.
Route 66, one of Bangkok’s most iconic nightclubs, has been a landmark on Royal City Avenue (RCA) since 1996, attracting both Thai and international partygoers for nearly three decades.
