Officials from the Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Thailand’s southern province of Yala meticulously searched a sedan today, which was found abandoned near a rubber plantation in Raman district.
The EOD team arrived at the scene after being alerted to the suspicious car, a bronze Nissan Almera, which was reported to be have been sold by a used car dealer, along with a pickup truck which was used as a car bomb and detonated near a police apartment in Pattani province a week ago.
The EOD team cordoned off the area around the suspicious vehicle and used a robot to check it for hidden explosives, before moving in to search it thoroughly. No explosives were found, but they found a car license plate inside the car.
Informed security sources said that police officials are on the lookout for two more aging cars, a van and a saloon, which are believed to be being prepared as car bombs.
The sources earlier said that southern insurgents have switched from using stolen cars to rental or legitimate cars as car bombs, because they attract less attention.
