A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Flores Island in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province early this morning, damaging numerous structures near the epicenter. Thai authorities confirm that the quake poses no threat to Thailand.
The Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department reported that the tremor occurred at 4.58am at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. The epicenter was located 3,373 kilometres southeast of Thailand.
According to the division, maximum intensity near the epicenter was estimated at Level X (Extreme) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Severe shaking was felt across the region, causing widespread collapses of buildings and infrastructure.
Despite the magnitude, the event did not meet the criteria for triggering Thailand's national Cell Broadcast emergency warning system due to its distance and low risk of impact on the country.
