23 more people were killed and another 164 were injured in road accidents yesterday, raising total casualties for the nine days over the New Year period to 393 dead and 2,251 injured, according to the ‘Directorate to Prevent and Reduce Road Accidents during New Year Festival’.
The main causes of yesterday’s road accidents were speeding(37.28%), followed by cutting in (23.67%) and poor visibility (17.75%). Motorcycles were involved in 84.3% of all the accidents.
Surat Thani saw the most injured (95), while Bangkok had the most fatalities (24), in the nine days.
Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council, said today that all provincial administrations have been instructed to advise motorists to exercise greater caution due to poor visibility, caused by morning mist and smoke from the burning of farm waste.
