Forty-seven people were killed and 269 injured in 280 road accidents on the third day of the long New Year holidays, bringing the three-day total to 143 dead and 841 injured, according to the Directorate to Prevent and Reduce Road Accidents.
Speeding accounted for 38.57% of the accidents yesterday, followed by drunk driving (23.21%) and cutting in (19.29%). Motorcycles were involved in 82.98% of the accidents.
Bangkok had the highest death toll over the past three days, with seven fatalities. Ayutthaya province had the most road accidents and injuries, at 35 and 32 respectively.
Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong, in his capacity as chair of the Directorate to Prevent and Reduce Road Accidents, said today that he has adjusted operations by shifting officials from highways to towns where holiday makers gather to celebrate the New Year.
He said that volunteers and probation officers have been mobilised to conduct random breathalyser checks on motorists and motorcyclists.
