Thailand’s daily COVID-19 infection rate has risen continuously over the past week, with records being broken each day since Friday July 16th, including today’s (Monday) new high of 11,784.

Friday’s figure surged to 9,692, then to 10,082 on Saturday, the first time the number passed the 10,000-mark, and then to 11,397 on Sunday. The daily death toll peaked at 141 on Saturday, while 81 new deaths were recorded today.

The cumulative total, since April 2021, has risen to 386,307. Bangkok remains on top of the provinces with most infections, at 2,134 cases today. Other provinces in the top ten are Samut Sakhon, Chon Buri, Saraburi, Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi, Pattani and Tak, respectively.

5,741 patients have recovered from the disease in the past 24 hours, with some 124,000 people currently infected. The continual surge in cases has led to a hospital bed shortage in Bangkok and other provinces, with many asked to enter “home isolation” or “community isolation” programs, in which remote medical supervision is given while patients wait for beds.

Most of the new infections are now being found in communities, as only 100 of the new infections reported today were found in prisons, as opposed to a previous record high on May 17th (9,635), in which the majority of cases were discovered in prisons.

Among the new deaths reported today, 26 were in Bangkok, followed by nine in Pathum Thani.
