Need more data for ‘accurate conclusion’ – South Korean experts after Fukushima inspection

South Korean experts on Wednesday (May 31) said more analysis was needed for an accurate conclusion after inspecting facilities related to water release from the wrecked Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

The inspection team of 21 experts visited Japan for six days from May 21 and conducted an on-site inspection of the plant, Seoul’s Yonhap news agency said.

“We have made meaningful progress in the scientific and technical review process through on-site inspection and securing detailed data, but additional analysis and confirmation work is needed for a more accurate conclusion,” team leader, Yoo Guk-hee, said at a news conference.

The team’s visit was agreed during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to Seoul earlier this month as his counterpart, South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol, seeks to improve relations with Japan after years of tensions.

Japan plans to release the water from Tokyo Electric Power Co’s Fukushima plant, which was destroyed during the 2011 nuclear disaster, into the sea sometime “around this spring or summer”, raising concerns in neighbouring countries.
