Myanmar migrants and Thai driver killed in a car accident in Ayutthaya

Three undocumented migrant workers from Myanmar and the Thai driver of a pickup truck died and six other workers were injured when their vehicle flipped over and caught fire, as the driver tried to evade arrest.

The tragic incident took place on the Asian Highway in Chiang Rak Noi sub-district in Ayutthaya province late on Wednesday night.

Initial reports from the emergency services indicate that there were nine migrant workers, including at least three women, and a Thai driver, whose identity remains unknown, involved the incident.

They say that the driver was transporting nine people from Myanmar to Bangkok, adding that, when he saw a police checkpoint, he accelerated to evade arrest.

The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle on a sharp bend. It flipped over and caught fire. Six migrants were thrown out of the truck, but three others and the driver were trapped inside.

First responders managed to extinguish the fire and used power tools to cut through the wreckage to extract four charred bodies.

Police say that they were burned beyond recognition and they could not even identify the gender of three of them.
