Mong’s dream of getting citizenship one step closer to reality

Mong Thongdee’s dream of becoming a Thai citizen is one step closer to reality after the Local Administration Department approved his citizenship application.

The stateless man born to Myanmar migrant workers in Chiang Mai was informed of the Local Administration Department’s approval of his application for citizenship in a letter sent to him by Mr Preecha Sirinam, deputy district chief of Chiang Mai’s Muang district on Thursday.

Mong said he was very glad that his dream would soon be fulfilled after ten years of waiting.  He planned to go the Chiang Mai district office with all the relevant documents, including the letter from the deputy district chief of Chiang Mai, on Monday.

After being granted Thai citizenship, he said he would teach children in the art of paper plane folding and would train a new generation of paper plane competitors for both local and international contests.

Mong won the Thai paper plane championship when he was 12 and represented one of the Thai competitors in the contest in Japan where the team won the third price.  Recently, he won the national championship for the general individual category and won the ticket to the paper plane competition in Japan next year.
