A man died today after falling through the temporary cover over a manhole into a 15-meter deep electrical duct on Ladprao Road in Bangkok.

Rescue workers took about half an hour to retrieve the man’s body. His name has been withheld. They had to use special equipment to raise the body from the bottom of the duct.

Ohchai Saengpon, a city inspector in Wang Thonglang district, said that he was working at a market near the mouth of Ladprao Soi 49 when he saw the man walking across the road from the opposite side.

As he was  reaching the traffic island, Ohchai said the man just disappeared from sight. “Two colleagues and I ran to the spot and saw the man was in the hole. He seemed to be still alive at that time,” he said.

At first, he wanted to go down to help the man but was stopped by someone who said the hole was too deep and he could be putting himself at risk.

A police investigation has found that the manhole had a temporary cover, which broke when the man stepped on it. The manhole belonged to the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.
