Japan’s first tuna auction of the year 2022 takes place Thursday

The first tuna auction of 2022 takes place at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market, as the special observation deck reopened on Thursday, following a recent decline in coronavirus infections. It had been closed since January 11.

Visitors were invited onto the deck shortly before 6:00 a.m. They watched as the buyers used traditional hand gestures to place their bids.

About 1,000 raw and frozen tuna from ports across Japan and around the world were put up for sale on Thursday.

Onodera Group restaurant chain bought a 211-kilogram tuna at the day’s highest price of 16.9 million yen or more than 4.4 million Baht.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which operates the market, says it has reduced the daily number of visitors to 27 from 120 before the pandemic.
