Irrigation road collapses sending floodwater into three districts of Ayutthaya

Residents in three districts of Ayutthaya Province, and those living along canals, were advised to move their valuables to higher ground quickly, after an irrigation road and embankment partially collapsed last night.

About a 5-metre stretch of the irrigation road near the Chao Chet sluice gate caved in, allowing water from a swollen Noi River to gush into the Chao Chet-Bang Yeehon Canal and onwards into areas in Sena, Bang Sai and Lat Bua Luang districts.

Ayutthaya Governor Niwat Rungsakhon said, last night, that a huge drainage pipe had been installed beneath the irrigation road by the Royal Irrigation Department.

Immediately after the partial collapse, the provincial administration instructed all sub-district chiefs and village heads to warn people in their areas of jurisdiction to move their valuables to higher ground for safety and to monitor the water situation.

About 90m3/sec of water are estimated to have gush through the gap into the Chao Chet-Bang Yeehon Canal.

Provincial and irrigation officials are trying today (Tuesday) to plug the gap to stop the flow of water.

Meanwhile, the Geo-Informatics Space Technology Development Agency (GITSDA) released satellite images of flooding in Chi River basin in three north-eastern provinces of Maha Sarakham, Kalasin and Roi Et for October 17th, in comparison with those taken on October 5th.

The satellite images have been sent by GITSDA to relevant agencies in charge of water management, to support their planning and efforts to cope with the flood situation.

In addition to the three provinces, GITSDA said it has been monitoring the flood situation with its satellite and sending reports, as well as satellite images, to relevant agencies on regular basis.
