Indonesia says it’s ready to broker Ukraine-Russia peace efforts

Indonesia is ready to broker peace efforts between Ukraine and Russia, said Indonesian President Joko Widodo during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit In Hiroshima, Japan, on Sunday, May 21st.

President Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation on Indonesia’s role in the Ukraine-Russia peace efforts, TVRI reported. He said that he still remembered that Jokowi was the first Asian leader visiting Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the midst of the invasion last year.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed humanitarian aid. Jokowi said that Indonesia has committed to contributing in the renovation of one of the hospitals in Ukraine.

President Jokowi made official state visits to Ukraine and Russia last year. After meeting Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin separately, Jokowi has expressed Indonesia’s preparedness to be the peace broker between Ukraine and Russia. However, there has been no follow-up since then.
