Hun Sen visits “my brother” Thaksin

Cambodia’s former PM Hun Sen travelled by private jet from Phnom Penh to visit former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra at his Bangkok residence today.

Hun Sen is the first foreign leader to visit Thaksin since his return to Thailand. Thaksin was convicted and sentenced on three corruption charges and was released on parole on Sunday.

Earlier, Hun Sen posted photos to Facebook of himself sitting on the jet, stating that he was about to visit Thaksin. “I am on my way to Bangkok to visit my brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand,” he said on his official social network this morning.

Hun Sen will have lunch with his long-time friend, before returning to Phnom Penh at 2pm.

Hun Sen was the longest-serving head of government in Cambodia’s history, before his son, Hun Manet, won the election last year. He appointed Thaksin, who was ousted by a coup and stayed in self-exile abroad, as his personal economic advisor.

Last year, Thaksin appeared at Hun Sen’s birthday party in Phnom Penh with his sister, Yingluck, who was also in self-exile.
