Hornbill expert gored by wild guar in Khao Yai national park

A hornbill expert was seriously injured by a wild guar, as he and his team were surveying the route for the production of a TV documentary on rare bird species in Khao Yai national park, in Thailand’s northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima on Wednesday.

Mr. Pitthaya Chueylua, and seven other teammates were trekking along a jungle route, about five kilometres from the main Thanarat Road, when a guar suddenly sprang out of the bushes and attacked Mr. Pitthaya’s legs.

The team alerted Mr. Pokklong Thongnuakheng, assistant chief of the park, who immediately asked for a helicopter to be sent to pick up the wounded man for medical treatment.

The search and rescue mission by the helicopter was, however, hampered by continuous rain and poor visibility. The chopper did later manage to land in a clearing and flew the wounded to hospital.

A doctor at the hospital said that Mr. Pitthaya sustained an open wound and a broken leg, but his condition is stable.
