The Area 10 office of the Department of Livestock Development has declared seven areas in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district as infectious zones for rabies, under which no live animals, especially dogs or their carcasses, are banned from being moved in or out of the zones without written permission from veterinarians.
If animals are sick or dead, their owners must notify veterinarians or authorities concerned within 12 hours, according to the announcement issued on Wednesday by Area 10 of the Department of Livestock Development. The announcement remains effective until October 16th.
The rabies infected zones cover Kok Faed heading north to Khu sub-district in Nong Chok district, to the south adjoining Lam Pla Thieu, Lam Phak Chee and Tap Yao sub-districts of Lat Krabang district, to the east adjoining Krathum Rai sub-district of Nong Chok district and to the west to Saen Saeb sub-district of Min Buri district.
People living within a 5km radius of Ban Kok Faed in Nong Chok district, where the carcass of a rabid dog was recently found, are advised to avoid contact with strays.
Sayant Pongkhan, a livestock development official attached to the Area 10 office, said that owners who notice their pet dogs acting strangely, such as developing increased anxiety, biting everything or excessive salivation, should call the 1555 hotline, the rabies control office in Din Daeng on 02-245-3311 or the dog shelter office on 02-328-7460 immediately.
If bitten or in contact with a suspected rabid dog or cat, people are advised to clean any wound inflicted with soap and see a doctor for anti-rabies vaccination immediately.
