Ferry vessel bombed in Yangon

A bomb went off at 6.45pm on December 18th on the busy “Cherry” ferry that transports commuters between Dala Township and the downtown Pansodan Port in Yangon.

A passenger on board said that, despite it being a relatively small explosion, at least 10 people were hurt.

“Luckily, I was on deck when it happened. It was loud. I’m not sure about the severity of the injuries. Everyone was even more skittish because we were on water and we were not sure if there would be another bomb which was yet to explode. Some also didn’t want to get too involved, because there were authorities already waiting at the port.”

While state media has yet to make any announcement regarding the bombing, a group claiming to be the PDF branch of Dala Township claimed that such acts of violence, targeting civilians, are committed by those who support the military or the military itself.

The statement also warned that there has been an increase in cases of violence, from bombings to extortion, by people operating under the guise of being PDF members, and that the PDF forces does not target civilian’s targets.

In the aftermath of the 2021 coup, battles continue to rage between the current administration in Myanmar and forces that oppose it, including Ethnic Armed Organisations and the National Unity Government.
