Four main roads in Bangkok are included in a five-year pilot project aimed at easing traffic congestion in the capital with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytical technology.
The pilot project is part of the Communication Ministry’s “Sustainable Mobility Project”, which is cooperation between the ministry, educational institutions and a number of the private sector, said Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith.
The roads included into the pilot project are Rama IV, Sukhumvit, Charoen Krung and the road around the Victory Monument, he said.
The AI and big data technology is being used to assist the real-time control of traffic flows on these roads, he said.
The technology provides real-time information about the traffic situation on the roads including the traffic flow at the four roads’ intersections captured on equipment with a sensor, he said.
The real-time traffic information fed into the project’s database system will be processed and analysed using the big data technology for the sake of constant improvement in planning the work of resolving the traffic congestion.
In the near future, smart electronic boards will be installed in the areas with heavy traffic to provide real-time useful information for motorists such as car park space available in nearby areas and buildings, said Arkhom.
Cooperation will next be sought with owners of the buildings that may have temporary parking space to offer under this project during rush hours, he said.
