EC conditionally allows PM Prayut to campaign with candidates

The pro-junta Palang Pracharat party has received a boost after the Election Commission gave its approval for the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to join party candidates on the hustings.

The ruling followed a question raised by party leader Mr. Uttama Savanayana asking if it is legally permissible for General Prayut, its prime ministerial candidate, to join party candidates in campaigning and addressing the crowds.

However, the EC warned that General Prayut must refrain from using his position as the Prime Minister and head of the National Council for Peace and Order in a way which will advantage or disadvantage candidates or parties.

The prime minister has been active in reaching out to people on inspection trips or during mobile cabinet meetings, a move which has been criticized by his political rivals as electioneering.

The incumbent premiere has, so far, declined to participate in election debates with other prime ministerial candidates, claiming that they are a waste of time.
