Daily COVID-19 death toll soars to new high of 212 on Saturday

The COVID-19 death toll today (Saturday) rose above 200 for the first time since April 1st, logging 212 fatalities, while new infections also set a new high of 21,838, according to the CCSA.

The new fatalities include two pregnant women and four who died at home in Bangkok.

Of the new infections today, 20,911 were locally acquired and 923 are among prisoners. Cumulative infections, since April 1st this year, are 707,659 and 736,522 since last year. 517,012 people have recovered. 78,773 are being treated in general hospitals and 134,671 in field hospitals. There are now 5,159 severe cases undergoing treatment, including 1,060 who are on ventilators.

Bangkok logged the highest number of infections today, with 4,221. The other nine provinces with high infections are Samut Prakan (1,428), Chon Buri (1,418), Samut Sakhon (1,372), Nakhon Pathom (781), Nonthaburi (699), Saraburi (595),Pathum Thani (514), Chachoengsao (448) and Ubon Ratchathani (396).

Of the 212 fatalities today, 207 were Thais, two from Myanmar, two Chinese and one Indian. Bangkok had most fatalities with 99. The death toll, since April 1st this year, is 5,972 and 6,066 since early last year.

The CCSA said that most infections in the 29 COVID-19 “dark red” provinces were found among families, communities, factories and in wet markets.

New clusters found in the past 24 hours are at a food processing plant in Bang Len district of Nakhon Pathom, a garment factory in Nonthaburi, a frozen food factory and home accessories company in Samut Prakan and at a paint factory in Chon Buri.
