The Criminal Court acquitted Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, aka ‘Am Cyanide’, of the murder of Monthathip Khao-in today due to a lack of evidence.
This was the third acquittal handed down by the Criminal Court, out of a total of 14 murder cases and one attempted murder case against Sararat. She was sentenced to death in one case and given life imprisonment in two others.
Today’s sixth cyanide poisoning case dated back 7 July 2015, when the victim Monthathip arrived in Bangkok from Canada, where she had a permanent residence and was greeted by a group of Thai friends, including Sararat, at Suvarnabhumi airport.
On the way back to her accommodation in Bangkok, the victim and her friends stopped off for some porridge. The victim subsequently died, but the doctor who examined her concluded that she had died of heart failure resulting from underlying diseases.
Sararat’s lawyer, Thannicha Aeksuwanwat, told the media today that the prosecution evidence was vague and the court gave the benefit of doubt the defendant and acquitted her.
