Police are hunting for a suspect after security camera footage captured a man being assaulted and thrown into the pond in Benchasiri Park in Bangkok's Khlong Toei district on Friday night.
Officers at Thonglor police station were alerted by park security guards at 9.40pm. Rescuers and divers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were dispatched and recovered the body of an unidentified middle-aged male from the water.
Forensic officers found no identification on the victim, whose body was transferred to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital for autopsy and identification.
According to preliminary investigations, security footage from inside the park showed a figure being dragged to the edge of the pond. A security guard told police that a visitor had alerted him after seeing someone fall into the water.
The guard threw a lifebuoy to assist, but the victim sank before help could reach him. The guard added that he had not witnessed any prior altercation in the area.
Reporters visiting the scene interviewed local homeless people, who identified the victim as a member of their community.
They noted that he was frequently intoxicated and displayed erratic behavior when drunk, though none witnessed the assault or could identify the attacker.
Thonglor police are reviewing additional CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an attempt to establish a clearer picture of the incident and determine the identity of the perpetrator.
Investigators are also attempting to contact eyewitnesses for further questioning, as efforts to identify both the victim and the suspect continue.
