More than 10 durian plantation owners in Khon Buri district of Nakhon Ratchasima have been accused of tampering with their electricity meters to reduce their electricity bills.
The cheating came to light when a task force from the Provincial Electricity Authority’s office in Nakhon Ratchasima became suspicious when the monthly electricity bills for a number of durian plantations in Khon Buri district were unusually low, averaging about 200 instead of about 1,000 baht per month for a plantation of between 3.2 and 4.8 hectares.
Officials visited the plantations in question to check the meters and it was discovered that the meters had been adjusted to reduce the meters’ speed.
The officials then notified the village head of their findings and filed a complaint with the Khon Buri district police.
Ronnachai Assanaphan, an electrician at the PEA office in Nakhon Ratchasima, warned members of the public not to fall prey to electricians offering to reduce their monthly electricity bills by tampering with the meters.
