Troops from the Pha Muang Task Force shot and killed six unidentified hill tribesmen and seized 1.2 million methamphetamine pills in a clash near the Thai-Myanmar border, in Fang district of Chiang Mai this morning.
Acting on an intelligence received, that a hill tribe drug caravan was about to smuggle a sizeable amount of illegal narcotics from Myanmar into Thailand via the mountainous area in Ban Muang Chum village in Fang district, the task force sent a patrol to intercept the drug smugglers.
The troops encountered 8-9 men carrying backpacks and ordered them to stop for a search, only to be shot at, triggering a brief firefight.
After the guns fell silent, the troops combed the scene and found six men lying dead, still with their backpacks full of methamphetamine tablets.
