A Chinese businesswoman wanted in China for alleged customs law violations was arrested by Thai police at a condominium in Bangkok’s Khlong Toey district on Wednesday.
Acting on information provided by the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok, a team of immigration police officers raided the condominium and arrested the woman, identified only as Ms Woo. She is wanted by Chinese customs authorities for allegedly defrauding the state of about 500 million baht.
According to Chinese customs authorities, the woman and her associates set up a fabric and garment import-export company that shipped goods to and from Shanghai. However, the company allegedly engaged in other business activities, falsified official documents, claimed tax refunds and destroyed the company seal, causing financial losses to the state.
Arrest warrants were issued in China for Ms Woo and her associates, but she fled to Thailand.
A Thai immigration official said she would be deported to China to face the charges.
