Cybercrime suppression police arrested three Taiwanese nationals and 18 Thais today in a raid on a large house in Lat Phrao Soi 88 in Bangkok, which was allegedly being used as a base for operating an online gambling service.
The police also seized many bank books and smart phones from the location.
A subsequent raid on an apartment in the Huai Khwang district uncovered 20 SIM cards, for use in Thailand and Laos, several bank books and Vietnamese, Lao and Thai currency. A Taiwanese and a Thai national were arrested for alleged involvement in online gambling.
Pol Lt-Gen Trairong Phiwpan, commissioner of the Cybercrime Investigation Bureau, said the Taiwanese gang hosted a site on social media, ostensibly for the trading of photos, but when clicking onto the page, it became an online gambling service.
All the Thais were employed as site administrators and each was given a smartphone, equipped with an online banking app. They were paid to persuade potential victims to gamble on poker, hi-lo and slot machines.
