As rainfall steadily reduces, with the onset of seasonal cold spells from China, air quality in Bangkok and its peripherals is expected to deteriorate due to an increased accumulation of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Air Quality Information Centre reported today that the amounts of PM2.5 in Bueng Kum, Lat Krabang and Prawet districts were measured at 41.1, 40.2 and 39.7µg/m³ (microns) respectively, which exceed the safety benchmark of 37.5µg/m³.
The centre also said, however, that the overall air quality in Bangkok and surrounding areas is considered to be good.
Today, the Meteorological Department has forecast rain for 30% of Bangkok, with poor air circulation from today through next Monday. This will result in the accumulation of PM2.5 in the atmosphere.
The public is advised to help in improving air quality in the city by refraining from burning garbage or incense, mopping the floors of their houses or rooms, instead of using brooms, using public transport instead of private cars, switching off car or motorcycle engines when they are parked and ensuring regular engine checks to reduce emissions.
