Bangkok suffers flooding, traffic jams, due to heavy rain Tuesday night

Many parts of Bangkok experienced severe traffic congestion last evening and today (Wednesday), due to flooding caused by heavy rain throughout the night, exacerbated by the reopening of most schools yesterday.

Areas heavily impacted included Ladprao, Vibhavadi, Chaeng Wattana, Phahonyothin, Ratchadapisek intersection, Khae Rai and Bang Khen.

Earlier this morning, the Ladprao 5-way intersection was flooded, after four hours of heavy downpours. Floodwater in the area rose over the pavements and reached knee level in some areas, while cars and motorcycles were unable to pass.

Thoroughfares, such as Ratchadapisek Road heading towards Sutthisan intersection, were severely congested. The Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), known locally as Mo Chit 2, also experienced flooding, especially on platforms 3 and 4, which saw 10-15 cms of floodwater.

Meanwhile, Satriwitthaya 2 School in Ladprao district announced its closure for today. They reported that last night’s heavy rain caused severe flooding in several parts of the campus and the water pumps could not drain the water in time for classes to commence.
