Ban on liquor sales in Bangkok from April 10-20

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to ban all wholesale and retail sales of liquor from tomorrow (Friday) until April 20th, in an escalated effort to prevent social gatherings during the Songkran period.

Pol Cpt Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, spokesman for City Hall, said today that the Infectious Disease Committee of Bangkok is in the process of drafting the formal announcement.

The ban, which will be applied to all retail outlets, including convenience stores and hypermarkets, is the latest in a series of measures being taken to curb the spread of COVID-19.  These include the closure of all shopping malls, movie theatres, sports stadia, barber shops, beauty salons, massage parlours, other retail businesses, fitness clubs, gyms, entertainment venues and public swimming pools.

Pongsakorn said that anyone who needs to be outdoors during the night curfew can log into City Hall’s website to download application forms to seek appropriate permission to do so.

Anyone suspects they may be infected with coronavirus can log onto the City Hall website:

City officials will then make contact and, in an emergency, can arrange transport to a hospital.
