Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa chaired a meeting today with ambassadors of Mekong riparian countries to discuss cooperation in resolving the twin problems of drought and flood.
Maris told the media that Thailand is ready to spearhead the joint effort to mobilise resources and knowhow, under the framework of the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), to manage the Mekong River and resolve the floods and droughts repeatedly affecting the five countries.
The Mekong Institute and the Mekong River Commission will also be involved, he added.
The ACMECS framework was drawn up in 2003 by the administration of then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, with Thailand being the coordinator, under the axiom that helping neighbours to prosper is mutually beneficial.
