Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today cancelled his official trip to Kuala Lumpur following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother.
He called an urgent cabinet meeting this morning, to plan the royal funeral of Queen Sirikit, who passed away at Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital at 9.21pm last night.
Anutin had been scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur today, at the invitation of his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, ahead of the ASEAN Summit, which will be held from Sunday through Tuesday.
It is reported that Anutin will attend the ASEAN Summit tomorrow and return on the same day.
It remains unclear whether he will be able to attend the signing ceremony of a joint declaration on border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, scheduled for Sunday afternoon on the sidelines of the Summit.
US President Donald Trump is expected to witness the signing.
If the US President cannot reschedule, however, Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow will sign on Anutin’s behalf.
Across Thailand, flags are flying at half-mast in a mark of respect to the Queen Mother.
