The scammer, who tried to dupe Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra by using AI technology to imitate the voice of a foreign leader, is based in a neighbouring country, said Pol Lt-Gen Trairong Phiwpan, commissioner of the Cybercrime Suppression Bureau.
The prime minister told the media yesterday about the AI-voiced scam, adding that she did not fall for the trick.
Pol Lt-Gen Trairong said that the scam gang makes random calls to potential victims and uses information gleaned about some targeted individuals from the Line platform, using AI technology to imitate the voices of people who are acquainted with the potential victims.
He admitted that it is difficult to stamp out scam gangs based abroad, because they are always adopting new technologies in their efforts to outsmart the police.
The cybercrime police commissioner said that the issue of foreign call centres and scam gangs, which have been preying on people in several countries in the region, will be raised at the ASEAN digital ministers’ meeting today.
