Officials in Tap Lan National Park, in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, are trying to help a gaur, which is suffering from serious eye infection.
Prawatsart Chanthep, chief of the national park, was alerted last Saturday, by a community leader in Khon Buri district, to a 600kg adult gaur suffering from an infection in one of its eyes Flies were noticed circling the injured eye. The animal was seen in the forest near the community.
A park official said that the gaur might have been infected by insects which cause eye infections in cattle and some wild species. Though the ailing guar appears to be harmless, he advised villagers not approach it.
The official also said that, since the location of the gaur is not accessible by car, getting the gaur out of the forest to be treated may be difficult. The only hope is to get medication and a vet to treat the animal in the forest.
The official reported that the Tap Lan Park will ask the community leader to advise villagers not to graze their cattle near the park, because they may venture into the park area and spread diseases to wildlife.
