Residents and businesses in downtown Chiang Mai have started to clean their properties and assess the extent of the damage today as floodwaters recede.
Pallop Sae Jiew, vice president of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, estimated the damage to the economy from the flooding, described by many as the worst in over 50 years, at about two billion baht.
Krit Kullachatvivach, a restaurant owner in Chang Klan sub-district, said he had been prepared for the flooding, but the impact was beyond expectation, adding that all the electrical appliances in the restaurant have been damaged.
The water level in the Ping River, which reached a peak at over 5m last Saturday night, was measured by the Nawarat Bridge at 3.45m at 10pm last night.
Although floodwater in the Mueang district is steadily receding, Saraphli district is still heavily flooded, especially low-lying areas, such as Nong Phoeng and Sop Mae Kha sub-districts, presenting a real challenge to rescue teams.
Excess water from the Ping River is now flowing into neighbouring Lamphun province.
