Two men have been arrested in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai for allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons, including grenade launchers, to ethnic forces fighting the Myanmar government.
The suspects told police that they were hired to deliver the weapons to the Karen National Union army, who were to collect the weapons in Mae Hong Son’s border district of Sop Moei.
Police found the arms, including 14 grenade launchers, 10 AR-10 style rifles and ammunition, hidden in sacks in the back of their pickup truck.
They said that they were paid about Bt9,000 per trip and had already completed three smuggling runs.
