A 3.6 magnitude earthquake was detected in the Gulf of Thailand at 5.26am today, about 49 kilometres from the shore of the southern province of Chumphon, according to the Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Meteorological Department.
The tremor was located at a depth of about one kilometre below the sea bed and was caused by movement of the Ranong fault, which stretches from the Andaman Sea through Ranong, Chumphon, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phang-nga provinces.
Kittisak Boriboonkaset, head of the public disaster prevention and mitigation office in Chumphon, said that no damage has been reported and the tremor was only lightly felt in some areas.
