A total of 1,685 motorcycle and car drivers appeared in courts on Friday and Saturday and were placed on probation for driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving or drinking while driving.
According to the Department of Probation, there were 1,599 cases of drunk driving, 82 cases of drinking while driving and four cases of reckless driving indicted on the first two days of the seven-day safe driving campaign over the New Year holidays.
Chiang Mai had 288 cases of drunk driving, the highest number in any province, followed by 146 cases in Samut Prakan and 127 cases in Nonthaburi.
Suriya Singhakamol, director-general of the department, said that four drunk drivers were also ordered to wear electronic monitoring bracelets for four months.
