Malaysian veteran politician Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as a member of Parliament this morning, two days after he swept to victory in a by-election.

Anwar, a former deputy prime minister, also created history as Malaysian Parliament now has a husband, wife and daughter serving as MPs at the same time, according to Malaysian media.  He will have the company of his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and daughter Nurul Izzah.

This is the third time Anwar is returning to Parliament in a tumultuous political career that saw him jailed twice. He was released in May after a royal pardon.

The by-election victory makes Anwar a step closer to fulfilling the agreement by the ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan to make him Malaysia’s prime minister after Mahathir Mohamad steps down.

Malaysian media reported that on his return today at the commencement of the second meeting of the first term of the 14th Parliament sitting, Pakatan Harapan  lawmakers turned up in full force to welcome Anwar.  This included Prime Minister  Mahathir and  Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
