Anti-Prayut protesters rally at Bangkok’s Victory Monument

Protesters staged a rally at the Victory Monument in Bangkok at about 4pm today (Saturday), to oppose Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha remaining in office after the Constitutional Court ruled yesterday that his 8-year term in office has not yet expired.

Chartchai Kaedam, a protest organiser, told the media that his request to stage the protest had been approved by the police in Phaya Thai district, on the condition that the protesters do not take to the streets.

He said that today’s protest will feature speakers taking turns to address participants about the alleged failures and mismanagement during the past eight years of the Prayut administration and what will follow if he is allowed to stay on for another term.

The event also features live music and opinion boards, on which protesters can write letters to their fellow protesters being held on remand.

Most protesters wore black shirts, as a symbol of mourning over the charter court’s ruling and in protest against the prime minister staying in office. Posters with messages which read “Prayut regime get out” were hung on the elevated pedestrian bridge and BTS sky train platform near the monument.

Traffic using roads around Victory Monument is moving, but slowly, as police had not closed the roads at the time of this report.
