Anti-establishment protesters rally on Aksa Road in Thon Buri

Anti-establishment protesters, led by the Ratsadon group and Salaya Student groups, are gathering this evening on Aksa Road in Bangkok.

Pol Maj-Gen Piya Tavichai, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said today that the Salaya Student group had already sought permission, from Bang Plad police, to hold rally between 4pm and 3am Monday morning at the Aksa and Utthayarn Soi 13 roads.

He said that the protesters must strictly comply with the Public Assembly Act, by confining their activities to those two roads.

Additionally, protesters must refrain from presenting any written messages deemed likely to cause public unrest, or which are defamatory, or cause noise louder than 150 decibels. They must also remain at least 150 metres from a palace in the neighbourhood.

A second protest was held from noon until 7pm today, near the Democracy Monument, by another, little known pro-democracy group.

Pol Maj-Gen Piya said that the group had notified Phra Ratchawang police about its planned rally before the march to the Kok Wua intersection.

The group reportedly told the police that they would discuss “bread and butter issues”.

The Ratsadon group, led by Parit “Penguin” Chivarak, will join the rally at Aksa Road.

Aksa road used to be the site of mass protests by the pro-Thaksin United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) in April 2014.
