Eight districts of Chiang Mai flooded

Flash floods and river overflows have inundated 27 villages in eight districts of the northern province of Chiang Mai, following heavy rain during the weekend, according to the provincial Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (PDPM).

Flooding has been reported in Chom Thong, Chiang Dao, Fang, Chai Prakan, Doi Tao, Samoeng, Mae Chaem and Hot districts, affecting 120 households, half of which are in Chom Thong district which were hit by water from the Mae Klang River which overflowed on both sides.

The PDPM office said today (Monday) that the situation in Hod district has returned to normal while, in Chiang Dao district, flood waters are receding.

It is reported that the Transport Ministry has set up a command centre in Chiang Mai province, to deal with the flooding and to assist flood victims.

Those affected can seek help by calling 1356 for the Transport Ministry, 1586 for the Highways Department, 1146 for the Rural Roads Department, 1690 for the State Railway of Thailand or 1199 for the Marine Department.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department forecasts isolated heavy rain in the northern, north-eastern and central regions, including Bangkok and its suburbs today, due to a moderate monsoon trough prevailing over the north and the northeast and a low pressure cell along the northern coast of Vietnam.

It has advised people living along natural waterways and at the foot of mountains to be prepared for possible flash flooding or overflows.
