21 days of Songkran: festivity highlights

Songkran in Thailand will last 21 days this year. The Ministry of Tourism and Sport has announced extended festivities to celebrate UNESCO’s inscription of the holiday on the prestigious Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List.

While the main celebrations and water fights usually last from April 13 to 15, there are many more events throughout the country to explore. We compile a list of places and dates below.

The word ‘Songkran’ comes from Sanskrit language. It means “to move up or to move”. This refers to the period when the sun transits into Aries. While the festival is celebrated from April 13 to 15, the actual new year’s day is 13.
